Recognising Stress Symptoms

If you could recognise stress symptoms in your life or business early, what would life be like? Sometimes life can be as stressful, as juggling fire on a cliff edge. But, when you feel like this do you find that you have low energy and as a result not sleeping well? Do you get ill easily?

Sometimes people cannot see the wood for the trees when they are this low in their life. I had been there, including when I found out my wife had a serious life-changing illness. This meant I wasn’t sleeping well, furthermore, I lost my appetite, which caused my energy levels to go down. As a result, I didn’t do the things I loved, such as fitness. Also, I found that walking the dogs even more of a stressful experience. It felt like even the dogs wanted to cause my stress levels to rise but they were smarter than that.

Coping with those stress symptoms

How can you cope with such life-changing events? I felt that my stress symptoms took over my life, like aliens camping in my house. It felt like I didn’t know which direction to turn and in fact, I kept making one bad decision after another. What I found was that I would use unuseful coping mechanisms to help me cope with stress, like buying stuff I didn’t need.

Although I was always into my fitness, I even stopped going to the gym. I even found that events, which other people might find relaxing, like walking the dogs. Even these I found stressful.

What I needed to find were ways to help me through some of the stress symptoms that I had. I also needed ways to help me cope with the stress and anxiety before it ate me alive.

How could I manage my stress symptoms?

It started with taking a long hard look at myself and questioning how I was behaving. This is not easy for a human to do, as we rarely like to admit our errors. What I started to do was;

  1. Identify my triggers early, so that my “fight or flight” receptor didn’t kick in
  2. I started to understand my response so that I could manage the situation in a more relaxed way. This helped me calm down so that I didn’t make bad decisions.
  3. I looked for avenues to direct my energy, such as being physically fit and mentally alive. This helped me manage my thoughts and mood long term.

At Stephen Bell coaching I can help you identify what is causing your stress symptoms so that you can feel happier. As a resilience coach, I can help you create the change that you need.
